Zion I Remix Contest from The Take Over

Bay Area hip-hop duo Zion I is well known over the course of their discography for exploring musical sounds and genres not typically associated with the sounds of the streets. Zumbi’s introspective and intellectually based lyrics have found an excellent match in the musically curious mind of AmpLive, who aside from remixing Radiohead’s In Rainbows album has brought soul, funk, electro, house and rock vibes to hip-hop in a way that makes Zion I both incredible and enlightening to listen to.

Silent on the discography front since their 2006 collaboration with The Grouch, Zion I has poised themselves for a new group release, their first since they brought the Japanese only release Break A Dawn over the Pacific for a stateside release in ’06. Their new album, The Take Over, is scheduled to drop next Tuesday, and in keeping with their format of engaging their fans and examining ways to evolve their own music in our current remix culture, they have launched a remix contest for one of the tracks off the new album, “DJ DJ.”

Today, Zion I released their stems from “DJ DJ” to the general public, using MixMatchMusic‘s simple Remix Wizard. If you’re an audio wiz already, just download the stems and work them out, but even for those with less musical experience or musicians not interested in downloading the stems, the MixMatch wizard provides the stems and the mixing interface to make this contest accessible to anyone with a computer. What’s excellent about the format here is that it doesn’t require any previous experience, as the wizard is very intuitive and easy to use.

Finish your remix and upload it by March 12th and you’re in the running for some excellent prizes, including a spot for your remix on Zion I’s Myspace page and lots of great Zion I stuff for the winners. For more information or to enter the contest, click here.

The Metermaids Announce Remix Contest Winners

For the past five weeks, the Metermaids hosted a remix contest inviting fans to submit remixed versions of their song “Nightlife.” With the contest coming to an end, the Metermaids selected two prize-winning submissions. The grand prize winner receives a copy of Reason 4, a Metermaids remix track featured as a free download on iTunes, and another remix track featured on the Metermaids’ MySpace page and official website. The runner up receives two signed copies of the Metermaids album Nightlife, two Metermaids t-shirts, and Metermaids stickers.

The winning remixes, chosen by the Metermaids themselves, feature an eclectic range of production aesthetics and willingness by contestants to breathe new life into the Metermaids’ music. The grand prize winner’s remix, created by user System: C, features a sped up tempo from the original song, complete with a rave bassline and classic pinball sound effects. The runner up’s remix, created by user ALB 33, is an ambient groove characterized by its echoing guitar chords and airy synth drones, complemented well by a jazzy hip-hop drumbeat that gives the remix its driven pulse.

Tra.kz Artist Spotlight: The Dance Party ("Sasha Don't Sleep")

TDPressPic

Sasha Don’t Sleep” is a track off of The Dance Party’s new tour EP titled “Tiger” coming out this Spring. They’re one of DC’s mega cool indie bands and also becoming a staple in the New York rock scene. Their gigs may be spreading across America but when The Dance Party puts on a show on at home, DC doesn’t sleep. A Dance Party show is a fun & exciting night of outta control rock and roll. You heard me. Check ’em out but be prepared for the addiction.

The Dance Party is a high-energy rock group from Washington, DC. With a sound that combines Dance-Punk, 80’s New Wave, and Powerpop, The Dance Party created a buzz throughout DC and the Mid-Atlantic with their frenetic live performance and hook-laden debut album, “Friction! Friction! Friction!”

The Dance Party recently recorded 10 tracks with Andros Rodriguez at the helm (Justin Timberlake, Cobra Starship, !!!). With a host of shows booked and new songs yet to be released, the band is positioned for rock & roll domination.

The new material demonstrates the band’s strengths – undeniably catchy pop songs executed with an over-the-top delivery, guaranteed to cause the uncontrollable desire to throw caution to the wind and get radical on the dance floor.” – blurb taken from The Dance Party MySpace Music Page.

Tra.kz Artists Spotlight: Radio Nowhere ("London Calling")

Radio Nowhere brings you fresh alt rock/pop sounds from Oakland, California. The band was started by Mike Baker, who writes all the songs, sings, plays guitar, and does “pretty much anything else that needs doing” for the band. Apparently, Mike writes most of his songs while he’s driving, on an ancient Casio keyboard bungee-corded to the passenger seat. This doesn’t seem safe, but we can’t complain.

As a youngster, Mike’s family would drive from the Bay Area to Idaho every summer, and his mom would make up stories to go along with what they were seeing along the highways. So, he got imprinted with the whole combination of music, empty roads and stories early on. This shows in his music. Take a listen to “London Calling” here (no not THAT London Calling, silly).
