Join the World's First Online Collaborative Orchestra on YouTube

A global collaborative orchestra? Holy harpsichord, that sounds ambitious. Tan Dun, of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon fame, has created Internet Symphony No. 1 “Eroica” just for the occasion. And Google/YouTube is, of course, facilitating the process.

Got what it takes to take part? You have till the end of January to download the sheet music, practice the shit out of your part (want pro advice on that one tricky bassoon or cor anglais part? check out the master classes), videotape it, and upload your submission. Then perform and record a second piece of your choosing. You know, that one that will make you stand out among hundreds thousands all those other people. Simple, really.

So, get to it. YouTubers around the world will be watching, listening and voting on the semifinalists in February (semifinalists will be chosen by real music nerds hailing from orchestras around the world – including the San Francisco Symphony, yay) . If you are an insanely awesome instrumentalist, maybe you’ll be chosen to play in the live performance at Carnegie Hall in April 2009!

…And for the rest of us realists, we’ll be watching and voting with interest. Don’t play an instrument at all? Venture Beat has a suggestion: “sing an instrumental part (if you can imitate the sound of a French horn) or beatbox the percussion part.”

For those of you who don’t yet know of Camp Lo, it’s time you familiarize yourself with this kickass hip hop duo. Let’s get that out of the way right now.

Saladine T. Wilds and Salahadeen T. Wallace (yes, they have variations of the same name) were destined for collaboration it seemed and over the last decade have created a style all their own that is rife with Blaxploitation lyrics and a sound that pays homage to soul, funk and R&B greats of the 70s. Sonny Cheeba and Geechi Suede, as they’re known now, have worked with a number of other hip hop hotshots including Ski, who produced their debut album Uptown Saturday Night, De La Soul‘s Trugoy, and Digable Planets‘ Butterfly.

Lucky for you fans, they’ve now agreed to open the door for you! So get on their Remix Wizard and make your own remix of Camp Lo’s song, “Lumdi”! You can find it on their MySpace page (on the left side) or in the Remix Wizard gallery.

Can’t get enough? Here’s an interview from ArtofRhyme and the video of their song, “Luchini”.

IKEA Invites You Into the Closet

You’ve got to give some serious props to the Swedes for their many clever Absolut ads over the years. For nostalgic browsing click here and here. Or join the Absolut Ad Collectors on Facebook if you’re a true fan. But besides Absolut, the Swedish bikini team, ABBA, Volvo, and of course the infamous Swedish meatballs, what else have the wily Scandinavians brought to mainstream culture?

IKEA! The furniture giant has always been rather innovative with their marketing, but a recent campaign of theirs is notable in that it allows consumers to interact with the ad online.

They invite the viewer to simply “Come Into The Closet”. These videos display Ikea products in the background while the people’s movements are controlled by sound. You can click through the various rooms and watch them go, upload the song of your choice instead, or even play the drums (on your keyboard) or sing/tap/whistle into the microphone! Click on “smart storage solutions” below the video to view close-ups of specific items.

In this era of information overload where savvy consumers are jaded with traditional advertising, it takes creative thinking – like providing interactive experiences for consumers – to stand out. This trend does not show any signs of slowing down and that can only mean good things for the new music industry, which is sagely capitalizing on opportunities provided by new media.

Here are a few IKEA commercials that demonstrate their willingness to push the envelope.

Ad-Funded Music: trueAnthem, WE7

“Brought to you by Fruit of the Loom.”

How would you feel about your music being preceded by a brief recorded message from the underwear maker? Are fans just as willing to listen to audio advertising at the start of songs as they are willing to put up with seeing ads? If it means they get the song for free, apparently the answer is yes.

We’ve talked about bands and brands partnering up (like Throw Me The Statue in an Urban Outfitters commercial) and the trend is clearly not slowing down. In this new frontier, it’s becoming imperative to think outside the box and explore new media. Even CBS is doing it: OMG Boobies: Victoria’s Secret on Your Mobile. One of the most prevalent examples of band/brand partnerships that we’re seeing as of late is the ad-supported music model.

trueAnthem, which we first stumbled across because of their early work with Ultraviolet Sound, has been forging ahead and signing more and more bands. Led by Brad Barnes, they are pioneering a “new way for independent and undiscovered artists and bands to get paid while sharing their music with their fans for free – and without having to sign away their lives to a major music label”. Check out their widget (which you can grab and post wherever) – you can download the artists’ album for free. Free, as long as you don’t mind hearing and ad at the start of each song.

Personally, I don’t mind at all. The folks at trueAnthem (probably largely thanks to Emaleigh) have done a great job of pairing the right brand with each band and presenting the sponsor’s messaging in an appropriate way. If you browse through the various bands, you notice brands like Guitar Center, Steve Madden, and Baby Phat… and when you hear that band’s music you can’t help but nod and go “yep… that’s a fit”.

Another interesting example is the recently launched digital music service WE7, which has “all four majors and hundreds of independent labels via The Orchard on board.” Compensation is derived from ad revenues.

What seemed like a distant pipedream not too long ago is certainly becoming the new reality. The music industry simply must accept that the new generation of music consumers – you know, the ones who grew up with the internet and can’t imagine a world without it – expect to get their music for free (one way or another). And they want to consume it in their own way, on their own time, and in their preferred way. So, we might as well make that possible and find ways to still pay the artists. And that is exactly what WE7 has done.

A key ingredient in this equation is obviously appropriate pairing of bands and brands. The sites and services who do this best will likely come out on top. The advertisers need to reach their target demographics. And the music capturing that particular audience might be just the vehicle to get them there.

Remix Delhi 2 Dublin

Back in September we stumbled upon a stellar group called Delhi 2 Dublin, which pummels its fans with a deluge of dub-heavy Indian and Irish fusion. Since we are delving further and further into remix culture, we were pleased to find out that not only is D2D all about it, but they’ve actually just released their own remix CD! Check out a recent review of the album here. If you want to keep up with D2D, become a fan on their Facebook page.

If you missed the boat and were not one of the lucky collaborators on the remix CD, you have another chance to play with D2D’s music. Check out the Remix Wizard on their myspace page to create your own remix of their song “Apples”. (Or go to the Remix Wizard gallery to see all the available wizards.) If you are a musician and have the stems to one of your songs, you can create your own Wizard here.

Delhi 2 Dublin is a great example of what many of us expect to see happening more often in the future. Not only have they embraced several sub-categories within the world music genre and fused them together seamlessly, but they are also taking advantage of the many tools available to musicians online these days in terms of remixing, online distribution and promotion, and social networking. Expect great things from these guys!
